What's the hype around collagen?

There is quite a bit of hype on social media with collagen supplements, so what's it all about?

Collagen makes up about 30% of the protein in your body and it the main component of connective tissues such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bone and skin. In addition to providing structure, collagen also plays an important role in tissue development and regulation.

Studies show that women's skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. After that, the decline is more gradual. Women lose about 2% of their collagen ever year for the next 20 years. As collagen diminishes, our skin loses it firmness and begins to sag.

So, adding more collagen to your diet could help with a range of menopause symptoms, from aching joints to dull skin.

Care should be made on the quality of your supplement, and check the ingredients if you have a fish, shellfish, or egg allergy (collagen supplements may contain these allergens as ingredients).

What else? vitamin C is vital for the production of collagen, so make sure you are getting enough in your diet. Bone broth is an excellent source of collagen (and gelatin, glycine and more).

What should I not be doing: avoid anything that decreases collagen levels or destroys skin collagen fibres, such as smoking, poor nutrition, stress, and poor hydration.

My favourite collagen supplements are:
