£45 Vitamin D check

According to the Department of Health & Social Care, 1 in 6 UK adults and 20% of children have low levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D is crucial for healthy bones and teeth, muscle function, and immunity.

The body creates vitamin D from direct sunlight on the skin, but between October and March we do not make enough vitamin D from sunlight. It’s difficult to get enough vitamin D from food alone, so considering taking a daily supplement of vitamin D during the autumn and winter should be high on everyone's health agenda.

Vitamin D isn’t just any old vitamin. It has hormone like effects all throughout our body!

  • Suffering with fatigue? Vitamin D has important effects on mitochondrial physiology and has been shown to increase the generation of ATP (your units of energy).

  • Do you have low thyroid function? Vitamin D insufficiency is more frequent in a hypothyroid group than in a control group, with a significant negative correlation between vitamin D levels and TSH.

  • Suffering with an inflammatory condition? Vitamin D increases the production of certain anti-inflammatory cytokines and reduces the release of some pro-inflammatory cytokines.

  • Imbalance in gut bacteria? Vitamin D may restore a healthier gut microbiome and attenuate inflammation.

This is a super easy at-home test to do, and in most people can be corrected with supplementation. Of course the sun is the best way to get us to optimal levels, but in the winter we don’t get enough of it!
